How late can you fly while pregnant?

Published: 6 August 2025

A relaxing break before the baby arrives, often called a babymoon, is something many expecting parents look forward to. But is it safe to fly while pregnant, and how far along can you be before airlines say no? In this article, we outline the medical and airline recommendations, so you can travel with peace of mind.

Can you fly while pregnant?

In most healthy pregnancies, flying is considered safe, especially during the second trimester. Still, it’s always wise to consult your midwife or doctor before travelling, especially if you're expecting twins or have any complications.

Most airlines allow pregnant passengers to fly up to 36 weeks into a single pregnancy and up to 32 weeks for twins or multiples. Beyond that point, flying is usually not permitted, even if you feel well.

When do airlines require a medical certificate?

Many airlines ask for a doctor’s note or medical certificate once you reach 28 weeks of pregnancy. This letter usually confirms your due date, that you’re fit to fly, and that there are no medical concerns.

Each airline has its own policy, so always check before you book. Cabin crew can refuse boarding if you’re too far along or can’t provide the right paperwork.

When is the best time to fly during pregnancy?

Most pregnant travellers feel best during the second trimester, between 14 and 27 weeks. The early nausea of the first trimester has usually eased by then, and you’re not yet dealing with the discomfort of late pregnancy. Energy levels tend to be higher, making this the most practical and pleasant time to fly.

Tips for flying comfortably during pregnancy

Travelling while pregnant doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. With some preparation, your journey can be just as relaxing as any other holiday:

  1. Book an aisle seat so you can move around easily.
  2. Take regular walks and stretch your legs during the flight.
  3. Stay hydrated by drinking water frequently.
  4. Wear compression socks on longer flights to reduce swelling and lower the risk of blood clots.
  5. Bring your doctor’s certificate if you’re beyond 28 weeks.
