Berlin is big, bold and bursting with history – yet surprisingly laid-back. Whether it’s your first time or you’re coming back for more, two days is enough to soak up its atmosphere and tick off plenty of must-sees. But with so much to explore, where do you start? We’ve listed top sights, the best neighbourhoods to stay in, great hotels and a sample itinerary to help you get the most out of your 48 hours in Berlin.
Berlin is a sprawling city, so where you stay really matters. Our tip? Book a hotel that offers a solid breakfast and is close to public transport (U-Bahn or tram). Here are three neighbourhoods we recommend for a weekend getaway:
Mitte
Bang in the centre and within walking distance of major sights like Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden and Museum Island. Ideal if you want to see a lot in a short time.
Recommended hotels in Mitte:
The Circus Hotel – stylish, central and located at Rosenthaler Platz
Hotel AMANO Grand Central – modern and close to Berlin’s main train station
Melia Berlin – by the river Spree, great for a scenic stay near the water
Prenzlauer Berg
A creative, leafy area full of cosy cafés, boutiques and local charm. It’s less touristy but still very accessible.
Recommended hotels in Prenzlauer Berg:
Myer’s Hotel Berlin – an elegant boutique hotel tucked in a quiet street
Vienna House Easy by Wyndham Berlin – colourful and budget-friendly, close to the U-Bahn
Friedrichshain
Young, alternative and packed with street art and cool hangouts – perfect for exploring on foot. Home to the East Side Gallery.
Recommended hotels in Friedrichshain:
Michelberger Hotel – quirky, industrial and full of personality
Hotel Indigo Berlin – East Side Gallery – overlooks both the Wall and the river
nhow Berlin – modern, music-themed hotel right on the Spree
From history to hip cafés, world-class museums to green parks – Berlin has it all. Two days gives you just enough time to get a real feel for the city and experience its contrasts. Here are the must-dos for a first (or second) visit.
Brandenburg Gate & Reichstag
Start your day at Berlin’s most iconic landmark, then walk over to the Reichstag, Germany’s parliament building. With a free reservation, you can visit the famous glass dome for stunning city views.
Museum Island
Home to five major museums on the River Spree. Short on time? Choose the Pergamon Museum (famous for the Ishtar Gate and Pergamon Altar) or the Neues Museum to see the iconic bust of Nefertiti.
Checkpoint Charlie & Topography of Terror
Dive into Cold War history at this famous former border crossing. Then walk to the nearby Topography of Terror, a powerful outdoor museum on the site of the former Gestapo HQ. Both are free to visit.
East Side Gallery
The longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall is now a 1.3 km open-air art gallery. Walk past dozens of powerful murals on freedom, protest and hope – it’s a true Berlin highlight.
Holocaust Memorial
Close to Brandenburg Gate, this moving memorial consists of 2711 grey concrete blocks. Beneath it, there’s an informative (and free) exhibition about the Holocaust.
Cycle or picnic at Tempelhofer Feld
Only in Berlin: a former airport turned public park. Locals come here to cycle, skate or simply relax. A great break from sightseeing.
Shopping & wandering
Browse indie stores at Hackescher Markt, shop big brands on Kurfürstendamm, or hunt for vintage in Prenzlauer Berg. Want a local experience? Head to Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg on Saturdays.
End your day in a beer garden or rooftop bar
Berliners love the outdoors. Wrap up your day at a beer garden (like Prater Garten) or enjoy the view from a rooftop bar like Klunkerkranich or Monkey Bar near Tiergarten.
Travelling with kids? Berlin is very family-friendly. Try the Natural History Museum, large playgrounds in every park, or Berlin Zoo.
Day 1 – History & Highlights
Do’s:
Buy a Berlin WelcomeCard
Free travel on public transport + discounts at 200+ attractions. Choose AB (city only) or ABC (includes airport & Potsdam).
Group your sightseeing by area
Save time – for example, see Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and Holocaust Memorial in one morning.
Download the BVG app
Berlin’s official public transport app. Plan routes by tram, metro and bus with real-time info.
Reserve in advance
Popular spots like the Reichstag dome or museums often get booked up. Plan ahead, especially at weekends.
Carry some cash
Many places accept card, but small cafés or markets still prefer cash.
Don’ts:
Don’t expect a compact city
Berlin is huge. Trying to fit too much in will leave you exhausted.
Don’t underestimate travel times
Something that looks close may take 20+ minutes by bike or U-Bahn.
Avoid generic shopping malls
Try local concept stores or indie shops in Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg for a more authentic experience.
Don’t cycle without paying attention
Berlin is bike-friendly, but busy. Stick to cycle lanes and follow the rules.
